Poultry Handling and Transportation Manual
The Poultry Service Association received GF2 financial support for the revision and expansion of the Ontario Poultry Handling and Transportation Manuel which covers positive poultry welfare practices during handling and transportation. The new version of the manual includes the addition of modular loading and changes to reflect the new national poultry Codes of Practice.
This project was funded in part through Growing Forward 2 (GF2), a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The Agricultural Adaptation Council assists in the delivery of GF2 in Ontario.

Poultry Welfare
PSA and Farm and Food Care developed training resources for those involved in poultry handling and transportation and delivered welfare training to poultry transporters.
The poultry module of Canadian Livestock Transport Certification (CLT) Program was also offered to industry personnel. Funding for the project was provided by Farm & Food Care.
Poultry Safe Loading Steps
When poultry catchers exit the ground floor of a poultry barn, there is a gap between the ground floor doors and the first step of the loading platform. There was no commercially available unit that would work for this situation. The catching crews required a step which was durable yet lightweight and easy to transport in their vans. It had to have a slip resistant surface, work on uneven ground, non-corroding, and be able to withstand repeated washing. The focus was to gain funding to support of the design, engineering, fabricating and in-field testing for a portable, durable and safe step to replace the use of empty poultry crates.
Poultry Transportation Monitoring and Tracking
The project focused on the research, design, creation and pilot of poultry trailer temperature and humidity tracking equipment. This allowed the driver to be able to monitor, from the cab, environmental conditions at different points throughout the load and take corrective action (adjusting tarps or vents, stopping the trailer, etc.) when conditions became stressful for the poultry. The system was also be designed to allow for reporting, setting parameters, creating alarms, managing and logging the data from the truck and trailer units to the company’s transportation software.
